KATHMANDU, May 10: Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Nepal (MPRF-N) on Monday demanded a parliamentary probe into the alleged misuse of red passports involving the party´s lawmakers.

A parliamentary party meeting of the MPRF-N held at Singha Durbar also expressed serious concern over the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) putting one after another lawmaker from the party under its scanner over the alleged misuse of diplomatic passports.[break]

According to MPRF-N Co-chairman Jaya Prakash Gupta, the meeting has demanded a joint parliamentary investigation team to probe into the alleged misuse of diplomatic passports. “We are submitting a memorandum to Speaker Subas Nembang on Tuesday for a joint parliamentary probe,” he said.

Gupta alleged that the CIAA had unnecessarily defamed lawmakers by publicizing the names even though investigation is yet to find them guilty. He said that they were concerned over the news reports quoting CIAA sources even when investigation is still underway.

During the meeting, lawmakers had demanded that those found guilty be punished as per the Passport Act. The Act has a provision of maximum one year in jail and Rs 500 in fine or both against those found guilty of misusing diplomatic passports.

The CIAA re-arrested lawmakers Bishwanath Prasad Yadav of MPRF-N and Gayatri Sah of Nepali Janata Dal on Friday immediately after the Kathmandu District Court released them on bail.

Earlier on Sunday, a delegation of MPRF-N lawmakers had reached the CIAA office to express concern that only lawmakers from the party were under its scanner. Over a dozen lawmakers, majority of them belonging to MPRF-N, are said to be currently under the CIAA scanner for alleged misuse of red passports.

Meanwhile, two Madhesi lawmakers -- MPRF General Secretary Ram Raja Yadav and Madhesi Kranti Forum Party coordinator Sanjay Sah -- who are accused of misusing their diplomatic passports, showed their passports and refuted allegations against them at a press conference organized on Monday.
