NEPALGUNJ, June 16: The number of women going abroad in search of employment illegally via Indian route is said to be rising in Banke district.

The piles of applications at Nepalgunj-based Maiti Nepal Office lodged by family members of women who went abroad within the past one year show more women of Banke flew to Gulf countries for employment using Indian route. [break]

According to Maiti Nepal regional coordinator Keshav Koirala, 150 women who went missing in Gulf countries have been rescued as of now. The rescued women were physically and sexually exploited, he said.

“Majority of the missing women are Dalit and poor. Thus, we can say that poverty is the main cause,” he said. Among the abroad-bound women, 90 percent went to Gulf countries and the remaining went missing in India, Maiti record says.

Koirala said female brokers are involved in luring women into foreign employment. Some agents are active in villages to woo women, he said.
