Western Upland Poverty Alleviation Project (WUPAP) covers 70,000 households mainly in Bajhang, Bajura, Humla, Jumla, Dolpa, Kalikot, Dailekh, Jajarkot, Rukum and Rolpa districts. [break]
The second phase of the project focused on community infrastructure, lease forestry, agriculture and animal development, micro-credit and marketing and institutional development.
“We will initiate the third phase of WUPAP within four months to continue uplifting the economic status of people in rural areas,” said Uttam Prasad Nagila, chief coordinator of WUPAP. "We will teach people income generating skills and ways to save money and provide various job-oriented trainings."
He said that the third phase of program will focus on community empowerment that includes social and economic aspect of a community, district service delivery and project management.
Project officials are currently working on "no cost extension" of the second phase of the project as it was unable to spend 75 percent of the total loan given by International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD).
“Spending 75 percent of the total loan given by IFAD was one of the conditions to start the third phase of WUPAP,” informed Nagila.
The government and IFAD under United Nations had signed the 12- year long project in February, 2003. The project was initiated under a flexible lending mechanism.
