Mogran win four gold medals

KATHMANDU, Aug 17: Morgan International College on Tuesday added two more golds in their kitty on Tuesday to win the highest four gold medal during the last day of the Morgan Cup First Inter-college Table Tennis Tournament at the National Table Tennis Training Center, Lainchaur.



Of the total seven golds, Prime won two and Caribbean took one.[break]

 

Morgan won men´s singles and mixed doubles titles on Tuesday. Earlier, they had won gold in women´s team and women´s singles event.



Anish Shrestha took the men´s singles title defeating Pradip Rokka of Prime. Shrestha defeated Rokka 11-6, 11-9, 3-11, 11-9. Prabin Sherpa of Prime and Anupbhakta Joshi of United jointly finished third.



Anish Shrestha and Renuka Khatri´s pair won gold in mix doubles. The duo defeated Prajwal Rajbhandari and Elina Maharjan´s pair of their own college 11-2, 25-23, 7-11, 11-9. Anupbhakta Joshi and Rojina Deshar´s pair of United and Bilosh Shrestha and Selisa Khadgi´s pair of Caribbean jointly secured third position.



In men´s doubles, Pradip Rokka and Prabin Sherpa´s pair of Prime secured the gold. The duo had a comfortable straight set 11-5, 11-5, 11-7 victory over Sonu Gupta and Bivek Gautam´s pair of Golden Gate. Binesh Khaniya and Prajwal Shrestha´s team of Prime and Anish Shrestha and Prajwal Rajbhandari´s pair of Morgan jointly finished third.



The winners were awarded by the CPN-UML leader KP Sharma Oli amidst a function organized by Nepal Table Tennis Association.



Tamrakar, Pandit win cycle race



Nirjala Tamrakar and Ajay Pandit won the women´s and men´s titles of National Friendship Cycle race championship organized by Pokhara College on Wednesday.



Pandit finished the 46 km distance in 1 hour 29 minute 49 second while Narayan Golpal Maharjan and Padam Limbu finished second and third in men´s section.



Tamrakar clocked 2 hour 9 minute 21 second to win the women´s title.  Pandit bagged a purse of Rs 35,000 and Tamrakar was awarded with Rs 10,000.



Dulal completes Iron Man



Former Nepal number one cyclist Suresh Kumar Dulal became the first Nepali athlete to complete the Iron Man distance event in Nottingham City, UK. Duwal finished eighth in his age group category of 30 to 38th finishing it in 10 hours 19 minutes 46 seconds. Iron Man is a popular event in Europe which is combination of swimming, biking and running 140 miles in a day.



Adhikari crashes out from heat round



Manisha Adhikari of athletics crashed out from the heat round of women´s 400 m race on Tuesday in the Youth Olympic Games being held in Singapore. Adhikari finished the race in 1 minute 3:49 second, according to the official website of Youth Olympic Games.



Five other sprinters competing along with Adhikari finished the race in less than a minute. Another sprinter Bishworupa Budha who competed in women´s 3,000 m race finished the qualifiers in 14th spot. Another athlete Tilakram Tharu is participating in 100 m and 200 m race on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.



Taekwondo Player Ranjan Shrestha has already crashed out from the competition.


Second round of Wushu selection



The second phase selection of wushu players to participate in the 16th Asian Games concluded on Tuesday.



The players selected in thaulo are South Asian Games (SAG) gold medalist Ang Babu Lama, Bikash Shrestha, Bikash Rai, Nirajan Ale Magar, Raju Maharjan and Sunny Shrestha in men´s category. Among the women selected in thaulo are SAG gold medalist Binita Maharjan, Erika Lama, Kalpana Sunwar, Bidhya Maharjan, Manisha Rawat, Sami Lama and Monica Gurung.



Players selected in men´s san-sau are Yuvaraj Gurung and Raj Kumar Rasaili (56 kg), Shankar Subedi and Mangal Prasad Tharu (60 kg), Purushottam Rijal (65 kg) and; Bhushan Bajracharya and Tej Bahadur Palli (75 kg). In the women´s category, Urmila Shrestha and Elina Chaudhari (52 kg), Jharana Gurung and Chahana Lama (60 kg) made through the second phase selection of san-sau.



Thirteen players will be able to participate in the Asiad to be held in Guangzhou in November after the final selection slated for September 1 according to Nepal Wushu Association.



Financial aid to Khadka



A committee formed to collect fund for the treatment of taekwondo player Ashok Khadka handed him a purse of Rs 280,000 on Tuesday at the National Sports Council.



The coordinator of the committee Olympian Sangina Baidya and Nepal Taekwondo Association President Prakash Sushmer Rana handed him the money. The money was raised from taekwondo officials, coaches, national taekwondo players and other institutions.



Khadka had picked serious injuries to his leg last year during an international taekwondo championship at Lucknow, India.
