NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama said on Saturday that the ministry had approved the proposal to hike the prize money.[break]
“This decision has made it possible for athletes to earn their livelihood from sports,” Lama said during a function organized by Nepal Karate Do Federation to felicitate its newly elected officials.
The 90th board meeting of NSC had proposed Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh respectively for gold, silver and bronze medalists of the South Asian Games (SAG) in individual events. The government had earlier awarded Rs 3 lakh to the gold medalist of the 11th SAG while the silver medalists and bronze medalists were awarded Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively.
Likewise, MoF has also given its nod to the NSC board´s decision to award Rs 25 lakhs to the gold medalists of the Asian Games. The silver medalists and bronze medalists will now take home Rs 15 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively.
The prize money for Olympics, if any Nepali athlete wins, is Rs 10 million for gold, Rs 75 lakhs for silver and Rs 50 lakh for bronze.
