KATHMANDU, Dec 6: With the aim of ensuring access of students from the marginalized communities to private schools, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has identified 425 private and boarding schools to provide free education to such students.

MoE has made it mandatory for these private schools to award scholarships to at least 50 students for every 500 students enrolled. The ministry took the initiative upon instructions from the Office of the Prime Minister to bring about reforms in the education sector.[break]

According to MoE Spokesperson Mahashram Sharma, a committee comprising the representatives from the Private and Boarding Schools´ Organization, Nepal (PABSON) and N-PABSON has recommended including more private schools for the program.

“A total of 21,250 students will benefit under the plan from the next academic session,” said Sharma.

Vocational classes from new session

In yet another move to promote technical and vocational education at the school level, the Department of Education (DoE) has asked 100 community schools across the country to take permission to include vocational subjects in their syllabus for grade 9 and 10.

DoE director Tek Narayan Pandey said a special committee in coordination with the district education offices undertook a study to see if these schools could run vocational subjects.

“The textbooks have also been prepared and we are hopeful about starting classes from the new academic session,” said Pandey. Some of the schools have already built infrastructures for vocational subjects.

Total literacy campaign

Similarly, the government in order to give momentum to its Rs 4 billion literacy campaign to start from January 14 has formed a separate informal education division in the district education offices across the country. The ministry has trained 31 under secretaries, while district education offices have also appointed an informal education coordinator to implement the campaign.
