"I am not being abducted and have been away from home owing to a family issue," said Basyal to a top police officer, who does not want to be named, by telephone on Wednesday. [break]
Basyal was elected to the Constituent Assembly (CA) from Parbat district through direct election.
Police started searching for him after his wife approached the Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu (MPRK) last week to complain that he had been out of contact for a month and must have been held captive by his girlfriend.
"MPRK, sensing it was a purely family affair, persuaded her not to register the complaint and assured that Basyal´s whereabouts would be found out soon," said an official.
Police worked hard to find clues to his whereabouts. He was found not to have showed up at the CA after May 28. His mobile phone remained switched off. "Lately we had information that he was seen with a girl in Chitwan," officials said.
According to sources, Basyal had turned his back on his wife and went off with a Tamang girl who reportedly owns a restaurant in the capital.
Basyal had beseeched the police officer he contacted Wednesday morning not to make the case public.
His wife, during consultations with police officials, said that she had informed party headquarters about Basyal´s absence, but to no avail.
