KATHMANDU, Sept 15: Minister for Industry Mahesh Basnet has said that the progress toward enlisting Micro Enterprise Development (MED) as a devolved sector is a crucial achievement in Nepal's poverty alleviation efforts.

"Devolution of MED sector to the local bodies will have lasting impacts toward accelerating Nepal's poverty alleviation initiatives," Basnet said, speaking at a workshop organized by the Ministry of Industry in Kathmandu.

Similarly, Secretary at the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD), Madhav Prasad Regmi, said that local resources-based micro enterprises have created jobs in rural areas and contributed to poverty alleviation. He also said local bodies should prioritize such micro enterprises.

Jaya Mukunda Khanal, secretary at MoI, said his ministry will propose the cabinet to recognize MED as a fully devolved sector soon. Micro Enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP), which MoI is implementing jointly with UNDP, is being transformed into government's own Micro Enterprise Development for Poverty Alleviation (MEDPA) program and implemented through local bodies.

Currently implemented in 64 districts, the government plans to expand the program to all the districts by 2017/18.
