Maoist union demands teachers' reinstatement

KATHMANDU, March 14: Maoist-aligned All Nepal Teachers Organization (ANTO) has demanded implementation of the agreement reached with the government regarding reinstatement of 401 teachers who were forced to quit their jobs during the insurgency.



ANTO Chairman Gunaraj Lohani said the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government had signed an agreement with his union to reinstate the teachers.[break]



"The government had agreed to restore teachers who were forced to quit their jobs after being victims of conflict," Lohani told Republica,



"We´ll hold meetings with Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal and Minster for Education Ganga Lal Tuladhar tomorrow (Tuesday) for this."



He said a delegation from the union has already met with Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Barsa Man Pun, who assured the delegation that the agreement would be implemented without delay.



A commission was formed during the Maoist-led government to find out the number of teachers who were forced to resign during the insurgency, and the committee had recommended restoring 401 such teachers.



The commission was headed by Janardan Nepal, then joint secretary at the Ministry of Education. ANTO and the government had signed an agreement to implement the commission´s recommendations.
