KATHMANDU, Feb 1: The Health Ministry has decided to give Rs 10 million as assistance to a Maoist-owned hospital in the capital, Kantipur daily reported Sunday.

The daily said the minister – Giriraj Mani Pokharel of Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) – gave the orders to provide the aid to Jana Maitri Hospital at Balaju for upgradation of physical infrastructure and buying of equipment.

There is no provision in the law to directly give aid to a private health institution.

The Maoist party had bought Siddhartha Apollo Hospital some nine months ago and renamed it Jana Maitri Hospital, the daily added.

Minister Pokharel defended the decision, saying other hospitals have also been getting government assistance.
