KATHMANDU, May 1: The transportation of food has come to a standstill on Saturday due to mass demonstrations.

"Transporters and truck drivers are now unwilling to transport UN World Food Program (WFP)  food items fearing physically assault on them and attack on trucks," said Seetashma Thapa, Special Assistant to WFP Country Director.[break]

Eight trucks that were ferrying food from Attariya to Dadeldhura were asked to pay 5,000 rupees per truck as donation to the Maoists.

"They were allowed to move forward only after they paid a donation of Rs 1000 each. Another 15 trucks were allowed to move after paying Rs 500 each along the same route," she added.

Suppliers have stopped transporting WFP´s food across the country on the eve of mass demonstrations followed by Maoist ´indefinite strike´.
