Dil Bahadur Sapkota, 60, and his wife Yashoda, 55, of Vyas-2, Malpot Line and Tika Ram Shrestha, 60, of Vyas-10 were killed in the sudden attack by Dibing Rana Magar, 23, also of Vyas-2, Malpot Line.[break]
Rana Magar left his home around 5:30 a.m. armed with a knife, entered the Sapkota home in the neighborhood and killed the couple on the spot. Police said the assailant may have attacked them when they were in the kitchen.
Rana Magar then walked to the Shrestha house some 300 meters away and attacked Tika Ram at his grocery store. Eyewitnesses said Rana Magar then went up to the third floor to attack Tilak Ram´s wife Parvati, 57.
“There was blood on his hands and on his knife. I thought he may have been cutting a goat,” Pavitra Thapa of Deurali Nagar said. “But then he attacked Tika Ram, who was at his store. Terrified at what I saw, I went inside my house, and it turned out he had gone upstairs and attacked Shrestha´s wife also,” Thapa added.
Tika Ram breathed his last while undergoing treatment while Parvati is in critical condition at the Western Regional Hospital, Pokhara.
Police nabbed the killer while he was trying to flee after having jumped into the Sati-Madi river from a suspension bridge in Deurali Nagar. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Tanahu Ishwari Prasad Chapagain said investigations into the motive for the murders are continuing. “The accused has owned up the multiple crime but we have yet to learn why he did it,” DSP Chapagain said.
Rana Magar´s family said he has been sick for the past few days. “He became worried after a shaman said he was under the spell of four witches,” his father Jaman Singh said. “I was filling water and didn´t know when he went out of the house with the weapon,” he added.
