Nitisha Lama, a 12th grader, stood out amongst her friends during her recent college farewell program. Credit goes to her bold take on accessories. The 18-year-old had teamed up black sari with wooden necklace and yellow earrings.
“I wanted something that clashed with my sari and yet didn’t look incongruous,” shared Nitisha. Nevertheless, her selection of ethnic-looking baubles made a statement.
For the past few years, big, bold and dramatic jewelries—that make a statement— are quite in rage from international runways to the streets.
Because of this approach to jewelry trend, a complete jewelry-set is no longer required. With just a dramatic hair accessory or a long dangling chain with an enormous pendant (for instance), even a Plain Jane can get a more sophisticated look.
Apart from updating their apparel department, fashion stores in the Valley have also started incorporating and updating their accessories list. The latest update is the hair bands in different avatars and brooch. Big hair bands or the ones accentuated with feathers or other appliqués are floating in the market. Dramatic hair accessories are something to look out for this season.
“This year, I’m going to add more variety to the accessory section as there have been quite a lot of queries and demand for it,” informed Nilima Sharma of Nilima Studio of Fashion at City Center, Kamalpokhari.
Along with a wide range of apparels, her studio has an assortment of statement accessories ranging from studded leather bands, exotic cuffs to long chains wrapped in ribbon, which has occupied the nooks and corners of the store.
Way before the fancy stores began including accessories, Thamel was, and still is, a place to hunt for jewelries. Even the corner street vendors have some cool assortments, besides the regular looking bangles and necklaces; and the best part is they come in prices that fit your pocket.
This season, it’s time to move on or jazz up the ubiquitous monochromatic hued bangles that are aplenty in Basantapur Night Market and other fashion stores. Wooden bangles in different cuts and shapes have floated in. For more sophisticated look, opt for metal cuffs that evoke the vibe of ancient Egyptian look.
