Makawanpur, APF dominate first day of boxing tourney

KATHMANDU, Dec 13: Makawanpur district and Armed Police Force (APF) dominated the first day of the Third Nationwide Boxing Tournament that started at the International Swimming Complex, Satdobato, Lalitpur on Tuesday.



Niranjan Shrestha, Prakash Thokar and Dipendra Shrestha of Makawanpur registered easy wins in the pre-quarterfinal round.[break]



Shrestha beat Laxmi Prasad Duwal of Bhaktapur Municipality in the 49-kg weight category on the basis of points superiority. Thokar was announced the winner against Prakash Kumar Bista of Bhaktapur Municipality in the 52-kg weight category after the referee stopped the contest (RSC) in the first round.



Dipendra Shrestha beat Sabin Bogati by a huge margin of 13-5.



Similarly, APF players also registered three wins and confirmed quarterfinal spots. Bikram Pariyar, Krishna Chandra Shrestha and Bikash Lama won their respective matches on the first day.







Pariyar beat Milan Karki of Patan Boxing Club in the 49-kg weight category. Karki retired from the game in the first round. Shrestha defeated Radhe Magar of Nepal Youth Boxing Group in the 60-kg weight category on the basis of better points. Lama registered win over Bijay Rai of Bosi Gaun in the 64-kg weight category on the basis of points.



Nepal Police Club players Surendra Kathayat and Bhupendra Thapa registered wins in the 56-kg and 64-kg weight categories respectively. Referee stopped the contest between Kathayat and Bharat Khatri of Salyan midway through the first round and announced Kathayat as the winner. Lama beat Gopal Shrestha of Rupandehi on points basis.



Yogesh Gurung of Defense Club and Umesh Rijal of Tikathali, Lalitpur registered wins in 56-kg and 64-kg weight categories. Referee announced Gurung as the winner against Jeetman Budhamagar of Rukum after Budhamagar retired from the game in the first round. Rijal beat Suman Thapa of Salyan on points basis.



Altogether 25 teams, including three departmental teams and 14 district teams, are competing in 10 weight categories in the men´s section and seven weight categories in the women´s section during the five-day tournament.



The winner of each weight category will receive Rs 5,000 while the second position holder will bag Rs 3,000. The semifinalists will get Rs 1,000 each.
