KATHMANDU, Nov 26: Major Niranjan Basnet, one of the four accused in the Maina Sunar murder case, is currently serving a UN peacekeeping mission, most likely in the central African country of Chad, highly placed sources told myrepublica.com on Wednesday. [break]

Nepal Army Spokesperson Ramindra Chhetri confirmed that Basnet, who faces suspension order from the Kavre District Court for his role in the alleged extra-judicial killing, has been deployed in one of the UN mission of the Nepal Army.

"He is working in a UN peace keeping mission," Chhetri told myrepublica.com on Wednesday evening, "But I am not in a position to reveal the mission he is now serving."

But sources said they have credible information that Basnet is on UN Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT).

When asked when Basnet was sent to MINURCAT, Chhetri said he would be able to tell only after his office opens on Thursday.

In another question why Basnet was deployed for UN mission despite his poor human rights record, Chhetri said, "He was not found guilty during investigation. Due to the reason, army Court Marshal did not punish him."

Basnet is the only serving army officer accused in Maina´s killing. The murder of the 15-year-old girl from Kavre in February 2004 is one of the major human rights violation issues with national and international concern.

In September, the Kavre District Court ordered the Nepal Army to suspend Basnet for his alleged role in the murder. The army is yet to act on the court order against Basnet who was captain at the time of the incident.
