KATHMANDU, April 6: Deepak Maharjan’s hopes of qualifying for the London Olympics ended on Thursday as he crashed out from the Asian Olympics qualifying tournament being held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Maharjan’s coach Anup Lama told Republica over telephone that he lost against Almatbouli Ihab of Jordan 9-7 in the first round of 81 kg weight category. [break]

“Depak’s opponent used to play in higher weight category but he lost his weight from 97 kg to 81 kg for this tournament. It was a close contest and we tried our best,” said Lama.

It was the last chance for qualifying for the London Olympics following Maharjan’s exit in the World Qualifying Tournament held some months ago in Baku, Azerbaijan.
