A meeting of Tarai Madhes Student Front, Madhesi Student Forum-Democratic, Madhesi Student Forum, Student Front, and Nepal Students Front held on Thursday concluded that the appointments were made brushing aside academic norms as well as proportional representation. [break]
The meeting demanded that the unilateral decision be scrapped and that the vice-chancellors be appointed on the basis of academic competence and capability.
They also emphasized bearing in mind the proportional representation, inclusive policy, and power sharing agreements between parties while making such appointments.
The student wings of the Madhesi parties have warned to take to the street if their demands are not met. Meanwhile, Madhesi Democratic Professor´s Association has accused the government of underestimating the Madhesi community by not appointing even a single vice-chancellor from the community.
The prime minister, in his capacity as chancellor, appointed the vice-chancellors for seven universities based on the recommendation of the minister for education earlier this week.
