KATHMANDU, Jan 1: People residing along different riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley staged protests on Thursday against a Supreme Court ruling and a notice issued by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City requiring an additional 20-metre setback along rivers in the valley.
Demonstrators, marching under the banner of the Non-Judicial Road and Standards Victims Struggle Committee, chanted slogans against the government’s decision not to allow settlements in such areas. They also displayed placards reading, “Give us justice, not verdicts” and “People must not be displaced in the name of standards.”

They warned that the expanded riverbank buffer would displace thousands of residents and strip people of land they have occupied and used for decades.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered a halt to construction within an additional 20 metres from river and stream banks across the Kathmandu Valley.
