Local, int'l handicraft products under one roof

KATHMANDU, Nov 23: If you are fond of handicraft items, Bhrikuti Mandap is the place to be as the exhibition hall is hosting 10th Handicraft Trade Fair and 8th Craft Competition from Thursday.



Customers visiting the expo can get various handicraft items like pashmina, woolen, felt, bamboo, hemp and allo products, silver jewelries, wooden and metal crafts, handmade paper products, leather products, carpets, traditional musical instruments, baby products, toys, dolls, decorative items, thanka paintings and pater (a type of grass found on the banks of the Koshi River) products, among others from Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.[break]



At the fair, customers can get handmade woolen products like caps, sweaters, shoes, gloves and shawl, among others, produced by Purna Handmade Collection, Bhaktapur. Woolen caps are available in price range of Rs 250 to Rs 550; prices of gloves and shoes start from Rs 250 and sweaters are priced between Rs 1,200 and Rs 2,500.

Rita Ranjitkar, manager of Purna Handicraft Collection, said her company has been exporting its products to countries like US, Germany and Japan. The company is employing around 200 women, according to Ranjitkar.



Prices of metal statues at the fair starts from Rs 700, while Nepali carpets are available in range of Rs 600 to Rs 16,000 and wooden toys are priced between Rs 345 and Rs 2,000. Similarly handmade dolls depicting different cultural attractions cost from Rs 60 to Rs 2,000. Handmade Nepali tops are available in range of Rs 900 to 2,200, Pashmina sweaters cost between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 and felt products like bags, keyrings mobile covers are available in price range of Rs 25 to Rs 500.



Likewise, customers can get baby bedding sets at Rs 4,000, baby cloth sets at Rs 450, printed shawl at Rs 15,00 to Rs 1,700, bamboo dining table at Rs 4,000, bamboo chairs at Rs 1500 to Rs 2,000 and pater products at Rs 250 to Rs 750.



Pater products like stools, mats and trays made in Bardaghat, Nawalparasi are one of the crowd pullers at the fair. “This is the first time we are participated in the expo,” Champa Devi Chaudhary, who produces pater products, told Republica. “I am very happy visitors have liked our products very much.”



Similarly, Indian jewelries are available in the price range of 300 to Rs 5,000, key rings at Rs 30, and the price of hand woven Tashar fabric starts from Rs 2,400. Similarly, Pakistani leather products are priced between Rs 200 and Rs 15,000, while the price of Bangladeshi saris ranges from Rs 1,100 to Rs 20,000.



“We are participating in the fair to promote Tashar products, which are very popular in India and Bangladesh,” Basabi Datta, proprietor of Basabi´s - the manufacturer of Tashar textiles - said. “Besides, we also want to expand our business here.”
