Livestock production in 18 districts

KATHMANDU,  June 22: Former member of National Planning Commission and study team leader Ram Kumar Sharma presented a report on livestock development program in 18 districts of Nepal, Friday.



Sharma said that all the project districts selected for the study had no update and systematic reports on livestock related activities, though in the past five year, livestock activities grew at the rate of five percent. [break]



He cited several drawbacks such as limited training and exposure to farmers, poor supervision, limited fund, insufficient technical human resources and basic knowledge to rare livestock.



Senior director Dr Damayanti Shrestha of the Direct of the Livestock Production also shared some of her findings on livestock raring activities.



Over three dozen of vet doctors took part in the discussion and many of them felt that the report lacked certain aspects such as marketing, local businessmen stake, transportation, vaccination, etc.



The program was implemented by Directorate of Livestock Production initially in 10 districts and gradually extended it to 18 dstricts with packages of different livestock commodity with the concept of public private partnership.
