Members of the committee reached an understanding to this effect Tuesday.[break]
A parliament meeting few months back formed the committee headed by Speaker Subas Nembang with a view to monitor the progress with regard to implementing the five-point deal.
Members said the leaders reached an informal understanding on giving continuity to the monitoring panel because the role of such a body is still relevant since various thorny issues of the peace process and constitution writing are yet to be settled.
Nepali Congress (NC) leader and member of the committee Bimalendra Nidhi proposed the idea of forming a similar body after expiry of the present monitoring committee´s tenure and the proposal was seconded by NC chief whip Laxman Ghimire and CPN-UML chief whip Bhim Acharya.
After that, the speaker said at the meeting that he would talk to the top leaders of major political parties in the near future and take initiatives toward forming such a body.
"We have realized that such a committee becomes instrumental to pressure the government and parties to expedite constitution-writing and the peace process. Therefore, we are mulling over forming a similar body headed by speaker himself," Ghimire told Republica.
He said leaders from the UCPN (Maoist), NC, UML and other political parties present at the Tuesday´s meeting were one on the proposal.
