KATHMANDU, July 1: Lawmakers have accused the government of not doing anything about the India-China bilateral agreement over Lipu Lekh--a piece of land in Nepal bordering the two neighboring countries. The agreement was reached while keeping Nepal in the dark and lawmakers have demanded clarifications in parliament from the government.

Following the lawmakers' demand, Speaker Subas Nembang issued a ruling to the government to furnish its stand on the issue in parliament on Thursday. Speaking at the start of the parliamentary meeting Wednesday, lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties flayed the government for its silence even after learning that the two neighboring countries had entered into the bilateral trade agreement via Lipu Lekh in May without seeking Nepal's consent."No other country shall have the right to decide upon the land of Nepal without our consent, but our government has been remaining silent even after learning the fact," main opposition UCPN (Maoist) lawmaker Janardan Sharma said. "The government must answer to this sovereign House what efforts it has made so far."

He said that the government should immediately inform the House about its diplomatic efforts and its official take on the incident.

Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP-N) Chairman Kamal Thapa expressed suspicion that the government in remaining silent over the incident was accepting the land encroachment by the neighbors. "What could be the meaning of the government's silence over the issue? I wonder whether the government is allowing the neighbors to use our land?" said Thapa.

Ruling Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Bharat Bahadur Khadka and CPN-UML lawmaker Ganesh Thagunna also demanded that the government exert itself to bring back the Nepali land without further delay. "Let's form a taskforce to inspect the area and find out the reality," proposed Khadka.

Lawmaker Thagunna, who represents Darchula where Lipu Lekh lies, said that only Limpiadhura was a disputed area but Lipu Lekh belongs to Nepal. "The government should not remain a mute spectator any longer," said Thagunna.

Criticizing the government, CPN-ML General Secretary CP Mainali, Rastriya Janamorcha Chairman Chitra Bahadur KC and Nepal Workers Peasants Party lawmaker Anuradha Thapamagar sought the government's response over the controversial treaty between the two neighboring countries to use Nepal's land without Nepal's consent. "Nepal should expedite its diplomatic efforts to effect corrections to the controversial treaty on using strategic land belonging to Nepal," said Mainali.
