The presidents of seven different labour unions put forth this demand organizing a joint news conference on Friday.[break]
Speaking on the occasion, President of the Nepal Trade Union Congress (Independent), Laxman Basnet, said they have already submitted memorandums to the top leaders of the major political parties calling for enshrining provisions in the new constitution that ensures minimum 10 per cent representation of labourers in all the representative bodies in the centre, province and the local levels.
Immediate past president of the All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), Shalikram Jamkattel said all the labour unions in the country were one on issues as revising the Labour Act, the Trade Union Act, the Social Security Act and forming a national labour commission.
The trade unions have also expressed the belief that industrial activities would pick up a new momentum with the promulgation of a worker-friendly new constitution within May 27.
The trade unions putting forward this demand are the Nepal Trade Union Congress (Independent), General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (Gefont), All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), the Federation of Professional Organisations, Nepal, Nepal Trade Union Federation, Nepal Progressive Trade Union Federation and the National Democratic Trade Union Federation, Nepal.
