"We have decided to ask petrol pump owners to share the burden with the metropolis and help ease the problems commuters face in lack of public toilets," Laxman Aryal, executive officer of the KMC, said, adding, "It is also their responsibility to serve commuters." [break]
It is estimated that over 250 fuel stations have been operating in the metropolis. If all fuel stations build toilets, Aryal said, commuters would not have to put up with the ordeals of waiting to relieve themselves.
According to Aryal, it is hard to find separate space in the city to build restrooms so the office has decided to ask petrol pumps to construct such facilities.
Meanwhile, the conditions of existing public toilets are so pathetic that people are often hesitant to use them. About two dozen public toilets are in operation in the metropolis.
"We will ask them to construct public toilets at the earliest," he added. He said the office can make it mandatory for the fuel stations to build public conveniences.
Meanwhile, the KMC said it has already commissioned the construction of 10 public toilets in collaboration with the private sectors. Out of 10, three have already been built. The office has said it will ask contractors to build the remaining facilities as soon as possible.
