Jumla hospital fire compels patients to stay in open space

JUMLA, Dec 20:  Following a massive fire that broke out at Jumla-based Karnali Academy of Health Sciences on early Saturday morning, more than two dozen patients admitted to the hospital were compelled to stay in an open space despite biting cold.



According to hospital sources, health condition of the patients have worsened due to extreme cold as the minimum temperature in the area is below zero degree centigrade for past couple of days.

Surayaman Limbu, medical director at the hospital, confirmed that  the regular service at the hospital has been derailed following the  fire as it has caused the  destruction of property worth around Rs 55 million including OPD building, medical  equipments, machines of laboratory, x-ray, ultrasound and dental endoscopy and pharmacy.

He further added that even resumption of emergency service at the hospital would take additional four-five days.



According to Somlal Rokaya, a relative of the patient,temperature is extremely low and it has been very difficult to protect the patent from the freezing cold.


The fire was erupted from the canteen of the hospital alongside the OPD building at around 2:15 am on Saturday morning. Police, however, said that an investigation is underway to find the reason behind the fire. Police suspected that the some people might have deliberately carried out the act.



The fire was brought under control within an hour of the incident with the help of the fire engine of Chandannath Municipality.



However, no human casualty is reported in the incident.
