Judo for Peace

KATHMANDU, June 18: Nepal Judo Association (NJA) is all set to organize Judo for Peace - South Asian Cadet Judo Championship next month.



NJA will provide training and education to conflict-hit children and orphans of Nepal after the completion of the championship scheduled for July 29-30, according to NJA President Deepak Harsha Bajracharya.[break]



Bajracharya said that Judo for Peace Commission is an internationally recognized body of the International Judo Federation, which aims to foster peace through the medium of sports.



“We will hold a two-day seminar on Judo for Peace on July 27-28, which will be attended by the commission´s head director Jan Eirik. We will implement the program after that,” said Bajracharya.



The NJA president said that Nepal has received funds to implement the anti-violence programme which is also being implemented by the IJF and the Judo for Peace Commission in other war-torn countries of the world.



A source at the NJA said that the fund received amounts to $20,000. “We are seeking more funds from other donors to run the programme effectively,” said the source.

Three hundred and twenty Nepali players from eight orphanages, five clubs, ten schools and nine districts are competing in the two-day selection round, which began on Friday, for the international event.



Junior players from six south Asian countries will compete in the championship that is being held for the first time in Nepal. Players in two age groups -- 10-13 and 13-16 -- will compete in a total of 24 weight categories in both boys´ and girls´ events.



On Friday, forty eight Nepali players -- 24 boys and 24 girls -- were selected for the championship. Top four players from Nepal in each weight category can compete but only the first position holders will be included in the national team. The remaining players will have to compete from their respective clubs. NJA has said that it will bear the cost of food and lodging for the first team of all the participating countries.



Among the selected players from Nepal, those who secured the first position in their weight category are Sushila Pariyar (Above 522 kg), Srijana Tamang (U-52kg), Sita Sarki (U-48 kg), Bishnu Khadka (U-44 kg), Priyanka Thapa (U-40 kg), Suji Shrestha (U-36 kg) in the girls´ 13-16 age group category.



Those who topped their weight group category in boy´s 10-13 age group category are Krishna GM (Above 42 kg), Anil Tamang (U-42 kg), Raj Rai (U-38 kg), Bidhan Roka Magar (U-34 kg), Bikash Bhujel (U-30 kg),Gautam GC (U-26 kg).



The selection in boys´ 13-16 age group category and girls´ 10-13 age group category will be held on Saturday at Multipurpose Martial Arts Centre, Nayabazar.
