KATHMANDU, May 6: Journalist Jeevan Bhandari has been injured in police intervention on Monday.

The accident took place when police prevented journalists who had reached to the office of the Kathmandu Municipality from entering the office, demanding reinstatement of their colleague Shiva Regmi to his office.

Journalist Bhandari suffered serious injuries to his left leg. Police barred journalists from organizing a sit-in protest at the main gate of office and pushed them back. Journalist Regmi who had been working at the Metro FM (94.6) megahertz for the past ten years was sacked by the FM management a month ago, citing directions from Office Executive Officer Kedar Bahadur Adhikari. The FM is operated by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

At the joint call of Federation of Nepali Journalists, Metro FM Academy and Nepal Press Union journalists were scheduled to handover a memorandum to Executive Officer Adhikari and stage a sit-in in front of the main gate.

The police all of a sudden barred them and tried to remove them using force. Journalist Regmi fell down and suffered leg injuries. He has been admitted to the Kathmandu Model Hospital.

According to doctors involved in his treatment, bone near to his ankle has cracked. Meanwhile, the FNJ has condemned the police move and termed the sacking of journalist Regmi as an open violation of rule of law.

Revolutionary Journalists Federation´s member and Metro FM Academy´s advisor Raju Lama has warned of intensifying programmes of protest if their demand was not addressed.
