KATHMANDU, Feb 17: Bharat Nepali, wanted by Nepal Police for his involvement in the murder of media baron Jamim Shah, was killed by an Indian underworld gang in Thailand, media reports from India said.

Times of India says in its report that police officials on Wednesday confirmed the killing of Bharat at the hands of Chhota Rajan´s two shooters. It took the Indian officials nearly two months to verify the information about the murder.

According to DIG Rajendra Singh Bhandari, the chief of Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Bharat was one of the masterminds behind Jamim´s murder. Bharat was also linked to the killing of then lawmaker Mirja Dilsad Beg a few years ago.

Times of India writes in its report : “Bharat was shot dead by two persons who fired four rounds on him while the latter was coming out of an electronics store at around 4:30pm.” The report also mentions that a Nepali woman had taken over Bharat´s body.

Bharat had taken responsibility of Jamim´s murder that took place on February 7, 2010 in the capital. Two motorbike-borne Indian criminals had shot dead Jamim in broad daylight at Lazimpat.

Bharat had reportedly told Avenues Television that he had planned Jamim´s murder as the latter was working against India´s interests in connivance with Pakistani intelligence agency.

The Nepal Police and a high-level probe panel formed by the government had concluded that Bharat and Bablu Srivastav, currently lodged in Indian jail, had jointly masterminded Jamim´s murder.

According to Nepal Police´s report, three Indian nationals -- Trilok Shahi alias Bablu, Mahomaed Wakar Saied and Sunil Singh -- executed Srivastav and Bharat´s plan with the help from Nepali aides. Former DSP Jagadish Chand, sub-inspector Prakash Chettri, Sri Krishna Paudel, Raju Lama and Kishor Khadka had allegedly helped them carry out the plan. Only Chettri, Lama and Khadka were arrested and prosecuted.

DIG Bhandari, who was also a member of the probe panel, said that Nepal Police had been trying to nab Bharat issuing a red corner notice through Interpol.

Investigative officials had further confirmed Bharat´s involvement in the murder after ascertaining that his phone call originated from Thailand. Like Srivastav, Bharat was known as a renegade of Chhota Rajan group and had been running his own criminal racket.

CIB officials said they had information that Bharat had lately settled in Bangkok together with his wife who worked at Nursing Home.

DIG Bhandari, however, said the information about Bharat´s murder was yet to be officially verified.

According to media reports, Bharat´s real name was Bhagavat Singh. He entered Indian Army in 1983 but joined the crime world in 1994 as the driver of Chhota Rajan. Later in 2005, he parted with Chhota Rajan and formed his own group.

Lately, Bharat was known to have partnered with Chhota Sakil, another Indian underworld bigwig. Rajan group had been tracking him after his group killed one of their aides.
