KATHMANDU, Feb 6: Indian investors have suggested the Energy Ministry to institute a separate body to address the problems faced by foreign investors in hydropower sector in Nepal.

The hydropower delegation from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) made such recommendation to Energy Minister Posta Bahadur Bogati on Monday during its meeting for discussing the development of Nepal´s hydropower sector and its potential.[break]

“We have suggested the Energy Minister to form a duly empowered body or committee that can address the problems faced by foreign investors when they arise by cutting across the hassle of going through different departments,” said Dr Ashok Haldia, the head of the delegation and Director of Power Trade Corporation (PTC) India Financial Services Ltd, addressing a press conference in the evening.

The delegation raised a couple of issues related to policy and implementation with the minister, according to Dr Haldia.

“We have also suggested that the power developers be allowed to acquire land and make other purchases at the time of giving the survey license instead of making them wait for five years, to expedite the process of generation,” Dr Haldia added.

Chairman of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Suraj Vaidya said that FNCCI and CII will submit joint recommendations to both the Nepali and Indian government about the hydropower sector during the meeting of energy ministers from the countries scheduled for February 15 in New Delhi, India.

The delegation including Haziq Beg of IL&FS Energy Development Company, Dalip Dua of Krishna Hydro Projects, DK Sing and KK Sharma of GMR Energy, Sanjay Uppal of SJVN Limited, Rishabh Jhunjhunwala and OP Ajmera of Bhilwara Energy, DK Sharma and K Pandey of L&T Power Development Limite, and Principal Advisor of CII S Sen will also meet Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Tuesday.
