Quraishi was sharing the Indian experience of conducting elections in a plural society.
He also claimed that no one has questioned the legitimacy of elections conducted in India so far. Quraishi said that the Election Commission of India takes many issues into consideration while announcing date to hold elections. "We consider agricultural cycle, national holidays, festive season, among other issues, before setting a date of elections," he added.
Stating that democracy cannot work without fair elections, Quraishi said that periodic elections test the accountability of political parties to people.
