KATHMANDU, April 17: UCPN (Maoist) leader Gopal Kiranti has threatened to wage revolt if identity-based federalism is not adopted in the new constitution.

Speaking at a program in Reporters Club Nepal in the capital, Kiranti, also minister for federal affairs, parliamentary affairs, constituent assembly and culture in the current government, said he is ready to go to any length for the sake of identity-based federalism. [break]

Kiranti said top leaders of the three major parties—Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal will not get even a piece of land to stand on, if they restructure the state, ignoring federalism based on identity.

He further insisted that anything less than 11 federal states will not be acceptable and went on to say that his party’s working relations with NC and UML would cease to exist, if the opposition parties unnecessarily pressed the Maoist party to yield in to eight states.

Ruling out any prospect of a new government soon, the Maoist minister asserted that the incumbent Baburam Bhattarai-led government itself will remain till the promulgation of the new constitution.
