KATHMANDU, March 13: The consumption of bakery items has grown significantly over the years despite the bakery producers making no significant investment to advertise their products. The bakery stores in the town say they are seeing growth in business over the years due to increasing consumer preferences and not advertisement or promotion of their products.

But the sector is seeing significant shift in marketing and distribution operations in recent years. Kedar Nidhi Pandey, manager of Hot Breads (Bakers and Confectioners), said advertisement of bakery items is insignificant compared to bakery consumption trend in the country. [break]

“We have increased our outlets to 10 as the consumption of bakery items has been by 25 percent every year,” Pandey said, adding, “The trend of consuming bakery items have increased here, with the increasing movement of people to other countries. They tasted bakery items there are started searching those items here.”

He further claimed that Hot Breads had brought a revolution in bakery sector as it deals in around 140 varieties of bakery products. “We get around 250 costumers in our each outlet everyday,” he said, adding that sale of bakery items goes up during festive occasions like Father´s Day, Mother´s Day, Valentine´s Day and other occasions.

Consumers are increasingly relying on semi-prepared meals from restaurants and other ready to eat meals throughout the world. But people here have started going for cereal-based foods, which have pushed the demand for bakery items, according to persons involved in bakery industry.

Bijaya Poudel, manager at Krishna Bakers and Confectioners, said the consumption of bakery items is increasing as more and more people have started preferring vegetarian items and are becoming health conscious.

“Unlike other readymade meals, there is no harm in consuming bakery items,” Poudel informed, adding that his company has been seeing significant rise in business despite not having to invest much on advertisements.

Krishna Bakers and Confectioners currently deals in 26 different bakery items, among which items like doughnuts, patties and black forest are in great demand.

Bakery items like bread, patties, black forest, fresh snacks, rolls, cakes, pies and other pastry products are becoming popular among different groups of people.

Niroj Shrestha, manager of Nanglo Bakery, said the trend of consuming bakery products is growing rapidly. “Though we don´t focus on advertisement campaigns to increase consumption of our products, the number of people preferring bakery items is increasing day by day,” Shrestha added.

Nanglo Bakery deals in more than 100 bakery items. Bread and party are the top selling items at Nanglo, according to Shrestha. He further added that the business of bakery items is more of less similar through the year but noted that the sale of party items go up during festive occasions.
