The committee has also instructed Central Market Monitoring Committee and District Market Monitoring Committee to control price-hike and ensure uniformity in pricing. Similarly, it has asked monitoring committees to control black-marketeering and punish all those people who are involved in such activities.
The decision was taken on the basis of suggestions given by consumers and supply sub-committee under FLRC. The sub-committee had consulted consumers and organizations engaged in supply chain management.
Earlier, the sub-committee had advised to amend relevant laws keeping the existing structure of open market in mind.
Shanti Basnet, coordinator of the sub-committee, said that it was important to examine the quality and adulteration of imported goods at customs points. “Only a few of the imported goods are examined and other good are being consumed directly without any examination,” she added.
Speaking at the sub-committee´s meeting, lawmakers said lack of implementation of the Act related to consumer rights and ineffective government agencies are the main poblems. “Only if the existing resources are utilized, the problem can be addressed,” Basnet said.
The draft report of the sub-committee which was submitted to FLRC said the government´s effectiveness in monitoring price and supply of essential commodities is almost negligible. The report further stated that traders were importing goods by preparing under-invoice which was one the main factors contributing to price differentiation of the same commodity.
To ensure an effective market inspection, the report suggests to equip the departments concerned with necessary human resources, infrastructure and budget.
