A cabinet meeting held at the official residence of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Monday afternoon decided to introduce the bill as the ordinance brought earlier to check the import of gold and silver will expire on September 3. [break]
According to Finance Minister Surendra Pandey, the bill will be registered at the Parliament Secretariat on Tuesday. “We will present the bill in parliament on September 5,” said Pandey.
The cabinet decision comes amid concerns over absence of alternative legal arrangement for the import of gold once the earlier ordinance expires.
In an effort to control rising gold imports, the government had hiked customs duty to Rs 470 per 10 grams from Rs 130 through an ordinance nearly four months ago.
The cabinet meeting also held a detailed discussion on extending the UNMIN term that expires on September 15.
According to Minister for Energy Prakash Sharan Mahat, the next cabinet meeting will take a decision on extending the UNMIN term.
Cabinet sources said the government is mulling to write to UN Security Council to keep Nepal Army out of the UNMIN´s purview after the extension of its term.
