According to Special Court Registrar Dhir Bahadur Chand, a three member bench of the Special Court´s Chairman Kedar Prasad Chalise and members Mohan Raman Bhattarai and Bhupenra Prasad Rai ordered to send Lama to police custody after the court could not conclude the hearings on whether or not he (Lama) should be sent to judicial custody. Lama´s lawyers could not plead on Wednesday due to lack of court time. The Special Court is scheduled to conduct the next hearings on Thursday.
Lama, who is also the central committee member of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic led by Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar, appeared before the court three days after missing the second deadline.
The Special Court had issued a second notice to Lama to appear before the court by Sunday. Lama had missed the first deadline to appear before the court on June 30.
Gangsters Parshuram Basnet and Chakre Milan, who are also charged with amassing properties through illegal sources, had appeared before the court as per the notice issued by the Special Court.
Basnet was released on bail while Milan is in the central jail for his involvement in drug smuggling and other charges.
The Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DoMLI) on May 19 had filed cases against Lama, Basnet, Milan, Abhishek Giri and Dipak Manange.
They have been accused of amassing properties through extortions, illegal contracts and banking transactions, among other illegal activities.
Lama has been accused of illegally amassing Rs 270 million, Manange Rs 147.3 million, Basnet Rs 116.1 million, Milan 70.7 million and Giri Rs 29.4 million from unknown sources.
