KATHMANDU, Feb 18: Four major parties-- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML and United Democratic Madhesi Front—have agreed to hold a fresh Constituent Assembly (CA) election on June 5, Wednesday.
A meeting of the parties held at Shital Niwas on Monday also agreed to form the election government under sitting chief justice (CJ) comprising neutral members. [break]
“We have agreed to hold fresh Constituent Assembly elections under chief justice,” senior NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba said after the meeting.
Emerging out from the meeting, UML leader Bamdev Gautam added that, “There are some differences on issues related to voters’ list and citizenship, among others. However we have agreed to form a chief justice led election government which will conduct election within mid-June (Jestha).”
“The new government will comprises around 10-11 neutral members from various backgrounds,” UML chairman Jhalanath Khanal said to BBC Nepali Service.
The taskforce formed with two representatives from each four party had proposed July 22 for the CA elections.
The taskforce had also reached an understanding on 490-member CA-cum-parliament, including 240 members directly elected under the first-past-the post system and 240 other members elected under proportional system. Likewise, 10 other members would be nominated by the cabinet.
