KATHMANDU, Sept 10: Minister for Foreign and Home Affairs Madhav Prasad Ghimire has decided to cancel his trip to United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
However, there is no change in the proposed visit of Chairman of Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi, according to Regmi’s press advisor Bimal Gautam. “Minister Ghimire decided to cancel the visit as per the discussions held between Chairman Regmi and Minister Ghimire on Friday,” Gautam told Republica.[break]

Gautam also clarified that there was no connection between the decision of Minister Ghimire and recent media controversy surrounding their proposed visit to the UNGA. “The decision was taken on Friday itself. So, the decision of Minister Ghimire to cancel his visit does not have any connection with the media reports,” he further said.
The decision of Minister Ghimire to cancel his trip to US comes in the wake of criticisms from various quarters that absence of both Chairman Regmi and Minister Ghimire, who is tasked with the responsibility for ensuring a conducive security environment for the constituent assembly polls for such a long time may affect poll prospects.
As scheduled before, Chairman Regmi and other members of his delegation will fly to New York on September 21. He is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 28 as per the provisional list of speakers released by the UN.
Among other events, Regmi will also take part in a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on disability and development to be held on September 23 -- a day before the UNGA General Debate formally kicks off.
