DANG, Dec 25: President of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Dharmendra Jha on Friday said the government has been protecting the people involved in attacking journalists.

He said the government has been reluctant to take action against elements against press freedom despite repeated attacks on journalists and media.

Inaugurating a gathering of the FNJ´s central councilors from the mid-west region in Dang, Jha said political parties and the government are not serious about protecting press freedom. “Journalists have been maimed, attacked, threatened and killed," he said, adding, “But the state is rewarding criminals instead of punishing them.”

He alleged that the political parties have also been protecting such criminals. He demanded that the clauses related to press freedom and the safety of journalist be mentioned in the preamble of new constitution. “Civil liberties will be infringed in the lack of press freedom.”

Saying that the FNJ is fighting for a total press freedom, he argued that the state should protect journalists. He said press freedom and journalism were at risk in the country.

FNJ Vice-Chairman Govinda Acharya also alleged that the state is not serious about the problems and security of journalists. FNJ General Secretary Poshan KC sought collective commitment from political parties for total press freedom and safety of journalists.

Around 200 journalists from the region are taking part in the two-day gathering.
