KATHMANDU, March 3: The government of Finland has pledged to support one million euros to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to improve sanitation status of schools and community.

The Finnish government would co-finance an endeavor in recovery and reconstruction of Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in communities and schools affected by the devastating earthquake of April 25, reads a statement issued by UNICEF Nepal on Wednesday.

As per the agreement signed between the two sides, the Finnish government has an option to provide an additional 1 million euros in 2017.

Over 33,000 people in general and 20,000 school-going children of 100 schools are expected to benefit from the support program, which will assist in the reconstruction of 60 partially damaged water supply lines, according to the UNICEF statement.

Jormo Suvanto, the Finnish ambassador to Nepal, said that the support would reach the neediest people, especially women and children in the four most-affected districts.
