Feedback collection moves forward, despite protests

KATHMANDU, July 20: Scores of locals, security personnel and cadres of Madhes-based parties were injured in clashes that erupted in Rautahat, Parsa, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Saptari, Sunsari, and Morang--all Tarai districts--during programs organized to collect feedbacks on the preliminary draft constitution.

In Rautahat, two dozen cadres of Madhes-based parties and some 31 police personnel were injured in a clash between security personnel and protesters in Gaur, the district headquarters of Rautahat.Anil Kumar Jha, president of Nepal Sadbhawana Party, and his wife and CA member, Dimpal Jha, and ex-CA member Baban Singh, who were among the agitating crowd, were injured in the clash. Likewise, Superintendent of Police Bhim Dhakal and Deputy Superintendent of Police Sudhir Raj Shahi were also hurt.

They fighting erupted after cadres from the Madhes-based parties tried to obstruct feedback collection.

The wrangling continued for two and a half hours. Security personnel from the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force had to fire five rounds in the air and 36 tear gas shells to take the situation under control and disperse the mob of protesters.

Gaur has remained tense since morning because the Madhes-based parties continued their protest to disrupt the feedback collection function.


Irate protesters vandalized six vehicles, including the one belonging to Madhav Kumar Nepal, who is a Constituent Assembly member elected from Rautahat Constituency Number 1, according to District Police Office (DPO), Rautahat.

However, Chief District Officer (CDO) Madan Bhujel sought to portray the feedback collection program a grand success despite the obstruction.

Likewise, a dozen protesters were injured in a row between the police and the cadres of Madhes-based parties in another such function held in Rajbiraj, the district headquarters of Saptari.

The clash ensued after police tried to prevent the cadres of Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal (FSF-N) and Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party, among others, from burning the copies of the draft statute outside District Development Committee (DDC), Rajbiraj.

Following the clash, the agitators blocked the East-West Highway at Bhardah in the district.

In Mahottari, more than a dozen protestors and security personnel were injured during clashes in all six constituencies where the feedback collection functions were held. The cadres from Madhes-based parties and the Baidya faction of CPN-Maoist had tried to disrupt the feedback collection function in all six constituencies of the district.

Police inspector Naresh Mahato sustained head injuries, according SP Saurav Rana, chief of District Police Office (DPO), Mahottari.

In Parsa, around 50 cadres of Rastriya Prajatantra Party and activists of Hindu organizations jointly shut down the market of Birgunj demanding the country be declared a Hindu state.

Over a hundred local cadres of Madhes-based parties were injured in the clashes that erupted in three different constituencies of Bara district. No one was injured in the clashes, according to DPO, Parsa.

Similarly, the police arrested 40 different local agitators of Sanghiya Limbuwan Party from Sunsari, Taplejung, Paanchthar, Jhapa and Ilam districts.
