KATHMANDU, Jan 14: Nepali Congress (NC) leader and former Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak has said that the decision to expel party General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, along with other leaders, was unavoidable.
Speaking at Nagarik Frontline on Wednesday, Lekhak said the Central Working Committee was compelled to take a strict decision after parallel activities increased in complete disregard of the party’s statute and discipline.

During the interview, Lekhak said it was unfortunate that rebellion had surfaced within the NC—a party regarded as the guardian of democracy—at a time when the country is facing political instability and crisis.
“This incident is not only unfortunate for the Congress but for democracy and the country as a whole,” Lekhak said. “Personally, I am also deeply saddened by this. We made efforts until the very last moment to prevent such a situation.”
He accused the general secretaries of challenging the party’s legitimacy by engaging in activities contrary to the statute. “They dissolved the party’s official election committee, arbitrarily introduced a new work schedule, and carried out anarchic activities such as registering parallel candidacies,” he said. “To keep the party within the framework of rules, procedures, and statute, disciplinary action became inevitable.”
Recalling that he had worked as a ‘bridge’ over the past three months to maintain party unity, Lekhak claimed that Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba had shown considerable flexibility in the interest of consensus.
