KATHMANDU, March 14: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Monday grilled former Chief of Nepal Police Hem Bahadur Gurung in connection with the irregularities in procurement of armored personnel carriers (APCs).

The investigation officers of CIAA questioned Gurung for his alleged role in releasing payment without studying the quality of the APCs supplied to Nepali peacekeepers deputed in Sudan´s Darfur two years ago.[break]

Gurung, in his defense, said that he was not informed about the release of payment by the police officers concerned. "I came to know about the irregularities from the newspapers," the source quoted Gurung as saying before the officers who recorded his statements.

CIAA has been investigating the case suspecting involvement of the police top brass in releasing the money to the APCs supplier without examining the quality of security-related logistics. During the investigation it was found that the APCs were obsolete and substandard.

Two investigation teams -- one led by lawmaker Pradip Gyawali and another by Home Ministry officials -- had concluded that around Rs 300 million was embezzled while procuring the APCs and other logistics for the Nepali peacekeepers deployed in Darfur, Sudan.
