According to Golf Director of the Resort Deepak Acharya, altogether 80 golfers from six countries will participate in the tournament, which is co-sponsored by Surya Nepal. Thirty golfers from Malaysia, nine from India and three golfers each from England, South Korea and Japan will join local players on the 18 holes tournament to be played on Stableford format.[break]
The event will have both individual and team events. Teams consisting of three players will be formed and the best two scores will be accumulated from each team. Maximum seven teams from a country can participate in the tournament.
Nepal-Malaysia Business Council and Gokarna Forest Golf Resort conceived this tournament last year and joined hands with the Everest Bank this year to organise it.
“We will continue our sponsorship to the event and try to make it large next year,” said Jagdish Kumar Arora, Dy General Manager of the Everest Bank.
“The event is organized to celebrate Nepal Tourism Year 2011 and we´ll continue the tournament to develop sports tourism in the country,” said Dorjee Sherpa, vice-president of Gokarna Resort.
Nepal defends title
Nepal successfully defended the title of the Gaekwad Invitational Golf Tournament on Sunday at the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort.
Altogether, 30 matches were played and Nepal accumulated 34.5 points to edge out India by a small margin of 1.5 points in the two-day tournament. Both India and Nepal won 13 matches each and 4 matches were halved but Nepal won 9 bye matches while India won just 6. As winner of the main match earned 2 points, halved matches gave 1 point to both sides and 0.5 points for winner of bye matches, Nepal lifted the title.
Tashi Ghale bagged the award for longest drive for the second consecutive day while Neeraj SJB Rana got the award for closest to the pin on Sunday. Kishan Agrawal from India clinched straight drive award while Chirag Doshi and Reshav Mehra´s team was rewarded as the best winning team.
Butwal Elite enters Subroto Cup semis
Butwal Elite English School advanced into the semifinals of the 52nd Subroto Mukherjee Cup U-14 Football Tournament being held in Delhi, India on Sunday.
Butwal Elite, which is representing Nepal in the tournament, defeated Mizoram 5-4 in tie-breaker in the quarterfinal.
The match was decided through penalty shootout after the regulation time ended in a goalless draw.
Bimal Gharti Magar, Akash Thapa, Suraj Hamal, Nishant Dungana and Sagar Pariyar scored from the spot for the Nepali team. Butwal Elite´s goalkeeper Sujit Gurung blocked a penalty kick. The tournament is organized by the Indian Air Force.
AFC B coaching course kicks off
The AFC B coaching course kicked off in Hetauda of Makawanpur on Sunday. The course is being held for second time in Nepal. Altogether 24 C certificate holder coaches are participating in the course.
According to a press statement issued by the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) on Sunday, the three-week course will be conducted by FIFA instructor Muhammad Basir, who was nominated by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Coach Kumar Katawal is the assistant trainer.
So far there are only nine football coaches holding B certificate license in Nepal. During the course, theoretical and practical as well as written examinations will be conducted. Participants who pass the exams will receive B coaching certificates.
Madhu Karki, Hari Khadka, Kumar Thapa, Paras Chaudhary, Arjun Chaudhary, Indu Rasaili, Prakash Aryal, Binod Lama, Som Thapa Magar, Pasang Tamang, Prakash Aryal, Chitra Darlami Magar, Ramchandra Thapa Magar, Sitaram Ghimire, Jeet Bahadur Pun, Suman Shrestha, Nabin Neupane, Rajendra Tamang, Yam Gurung, Mrigendra Mishra, Devendra Shahi, Shyam Sundar Singh, Lalit Chand, Dev Narayan Chitrakar and Bijay Lala Shrestha are the coaches participating in the course.
The course is organized by ANFA in coordination with Makawanpur District Football Association.
Free education for double gold winner
Bright Future School will provide free education up to higher secondary level to Nirmala Khatri who won two gold medals during the First District Level President´s Cup Running Shield Tournament that concluded on Sunday. The principal of Bright Future made such announcement on Sunday.
Khatri, a ninth grader at Mahendra Higher Secondary School, won a gold medal each in girls´ 3000 m and 1000 m race.
Tribhuvan Higher Secondary School, Paiyunpata won the running shield with 27 points. Tribhuvan bagged a purse of Rs 50,000 along with the shield. Durga Bhawani High School finished runner-up with 25 points while Janata Dhan Higher Secondary School secured third position. Durga Bhawani and Janata received Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.
Khusbu Gharti Magar of Durga Bhawani in girls´ section and Dinesh Pandey of Suntalichaur Higher Secondary School in boys´ section were adjudged the player-of-the-series in volleyball. The event was organized by Baglung District Sports Development Association.
Three foreign teams in Budhasubba cup
The newly elected president of Dharan Football Club Kishor Rai on Sunday announced that teams from Bhutan, Bangladesh and Australia will compete in the 14th edition of International Invitational Budhasubba Gold Cup Football Tournament. Dharan Football Club is the organizer of Budhasubba Gold Cup.
The club set up under initiation of Rai in 2055 BS has been conducting the tournament annually since then.
"We are thinking of reducing the number of teams in this edition. We will try to include few but the best teams, and try to make the event well managed," Rai said adding, "The teams from Bhutan, Bangladesh and Australia have already confirmed their participation."
The club will confirm the date of the tournament next week.
The fifth general assembly of the club on Sunday elected a 21-member committee unanimously under the leadership of Rai who is the also the founder president of the club. Rai is also the vice president of All Nepal Football Association. Dhana Prasad Rai is elected as vice-president while Purna Limbu and Pratap Tamang are the general secretary and secretary respectively. Ghanashyam Budathoki is elected as treasurer.
Gyan Jyoti, HIMS, LRI triumph
Gyan Jyoti, HIMS and LRI won their respective matches under senior boys´ category on Sunday in the Kodomo Baba Inter-school Basketball tournament being held in the school´s premises in Chabahil, Kathmandu. Chandbagh emerged victorious in the girl´s section.
Gyan Jyoti outclassed Children´s Liberty 47-14 in the first match of the day. Gyan Jyoti led the first three quarters 8-1, 20-0, 11-3 and was back in the last quarter 8-9. Kabin Limbu was the highest scorer for the winning side with 22 points in his kitty. Kabin Limbu of Gyan Jyoti top scored with 22 points while Bibek Shiwakoti and Puskar Karki netted three points apiece for Children´s Liberty.
HIMS edged past Sambotta 67-40 riding on 21 points of Sonam Tshering Gurung. HIMS lead the first, third an last quarter 19-7, 17-11, 23-9 respectively. HIMS failed to control the second quarter and finished 8-13. Tenzing Chowzing contributed 15 points for Sambotta.
In the day´s last encounter between LRI and Gyan Niketan, the former took last three sets in control after going down 8-9 in the first quarter to win the match 45-23. LRI led the other quarters, 13-5, 19-6 and 5-3 respectively. Nikesh Rai topscored with 21 points for winning side.
In the senior girl´s only match of the day, Chandbagh eased past KMC School 23-10. Chandbagh won the match, 7-7, 2-3, 4-0, 10-0 respectively. Sunita Gurung contributed eight points for Chandbagh. Bishranti Bomjan netted seven points for KMC.
Butwal United reaches semis
Butwal United thrashed Saubhagya Youth Club 4-1 in the First Madan Bhandari Gold Cup knockout football tournament here on Sunday to reach the semifinal.
Butwal United featured three foreign players on the match and one of them, Afeez Ole from Ivory Coast, completed hat-trick. Sameer Limbu scored the other goal for Butwal United.
Santosh Thapa scored the consolation goal for Saubhagya.
First Amateur Chess from Nov 22
Himalayan Chess Club is organizing the First National Amateur Chess Championship from November 22 to 26 at Gabahal, Lalitpur on the occasion of its second anniversary.
The winner of the event will get to compete in the Asian Amateur and World Amateur Championship representing Nepal. As per the rule of apex chess body of the world FIDE, players who has not crossed the rating of 1999 within the last two years will only be eligible to compete in the event.
Similarly, FIDE title holder, Nepal champion and also Olympiad players will also not be eligible to compete in the event.
The tournament approved by FIDE, Asian Chess Federation and Nepal Chess Association will be held until ninth round in the Swiss League Format.
The organizers have expected participation of 70 players in total. The winner of the event will be presented with cash prize of Rs 5000 and a trophy. Similarly, second to fifth position holders and best unrated players will be awarded with Rs 1000 each.
Twin victories for Premier
Premier College on Sunday enjoyed victories both under boys´ and girls´ section during the Ninth Prime Cup Basketball Tournament being held in the capital. In men´s section, Premier blanked St Xaviers 55-7 under boys´ section riding on 16 points for Biraj Rana.
In girls´ category Premier thrashed Bernhardt 46-6. Biraj Rana netted 16 points for the winning side. In other matches under men´s section, Trinity, Xavier International, Golden Gate and Morgan emerged victorious.
Golden Peak, Greenland win titles
Golden Peak and host Greenland on Sunday won the junior and senior titles respectively in the Sixth Greenland Basketball Tournament. Under senior´s section, Golden Peak saw off Valley Public 64-55.
Rakesh Shrestha contributed 30 points for the winning side. Golden Peak won the match 11-9, 18-8, 14-20, 21-18. Under junior section, Greenland saw off Valley Public 19-14 riding on seven points each of Bishwas Rana and Subash Rai. The host won 2-2, 6-0, 3-4, 8-8.
