The EU delegation that is currently in Nepal met UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal at his residence in Lazimpat on Thursday and inquired as to how the current obstacles appeared in the constitution writing process could be removed. The delegation urged Chairman Dahal to conclude the peace process and promulgate the constitution on the basis of agreements signed in the past and lead the nation towards the economic prosperity.
Jean Lambert, Head of South Asia Delegation of the European Parliament urged him to pay special attention to the constitution writing while saying the constitution was a common document of all people.
Talking briefly to journalists after his meeting with the EU delegation, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Dahal said that EU wanted to see unity among the major political parties and forward the constitution writing process on the basis of the understandings and agreements signed among the major political parties.
On the occasion, Chairman Dahal claimed the 30-party alliance led by UCPN (Maoist) has called off its general strike to create the environment for talks among the political parties.
Former Prime Minister Dahal said the opposition parties' alliance has no alternative to going for stern protests if the ruling parties continue their efforts at sidelining the progressive forces and one of the signatories of the CPA, while stressing on the need of making new form of agreement.
"We are for the political consensus as far as it is possible and urge the ruling parties to take initiatives to implement the political agreements signed with different community people and political parties at different times in the past," said Chairman Dahal. It is not possible to write constitution on the power of majority basis, he added.
Similarly, the EU delegation also expressed concern over the effects seen in Nepal caused by the climate change and assured that the EU was ready to cooperate with Nepal for addressing the problem.
In response, Dahal said Nepali rivers, and sources of drinking water in the mid-hills region were gradually drying up due to the activities carried out by some industrialized big countries while stressing on the need of having coordination among all to ameliorate the problem. RSS
