During the meeting the envoys expressed concern at the lack of progress in the peace process and at the heightened political tensions in the country. A press statement issued by the EU office in Nepal said that the ambassadors asked the chairman to show flexibility and make concessions in order to avoid a crisis.[break]
The statement also said that the ambassadors expressed their deep concern at the demonstration planned for May 1 and at the possible impact on the economy and tourism from the strike announced for May 2.
They discussed worrying reports of physical training being given to Maoist cadres, and the risk of confrontation. They urged Dahal to ensure that the protests were restrained and peaceful. They further suggested that the Maoists try to solve the situation through negotiations.
The envoys further stated that they were extremely concerned about Maoist fund-raising in the districts through extortion and threats, which was creating a climate of fear, the statement added.
The need to extend the Constituent Assembly, integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants and the future of UNMIN were among other topics discussed.
