Addressing the members of police force at the Police Headquarters, Naxal, Home Minister Basnet said, "In order to make the police institution more competent, it is important to end the 'master' and 'servant' culture within the police institution." The Nepal Police should emerge as an exemplary institution by embracing necessary changes in its working style, he said. The police leadership has faced criticism allegedly for abusing junior police staff by forcing them to do their personal works.
Home Minister Basnet has also assured of resolving the existing tug of war between the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force (APF) stressing that the two institutions should work hand-in-hand to maintain peace and security in the country.
He also instructed the police to remain apolitical, transparent, proactive, have zero tolerance to financial irregularities and be accountable to public safety. Home Minister Basnet also said that he would take measures to develop professional skills of the police force and equip the institution with scientific tools and techniques.
The home minister also sought briefings on the security situations via video conference with regional police chiefs. Home Secretary Surya Prasad Silwal suggested the police to form new security strategies as per the growing security challenges and new crime trends, according to the press statement issued by the Nepal Police.
