President Koirala said that NC cannot go against the court´s order as Supreme Court has already given a verdict that the latest extension of the term of Constituent Assembly (CA) was the last one. [break]
“I am still optimistic that new constitution would be drafted within the stipulated deadline,” Koirala said while addressing a function organized by Nepal Press Union. “There is no alternative to go to fresh election if we failed to draft a new constitution within that period.”
Koirala also said that efforts to settle unresolved issues with the Maoists are under way so that the new constitution can be promulgated within the stipulated deadline. “I hope the Maoists will ultimately fall in line and the new constitution will be drafted within May 27. I am fully convinced about this,” he said.
Koirala, however, said NC would not accept directly-elected presidential system. “Democratic intellectuals have been saying that the NC is afraid of Prachanda becoming president. But that is not true,” he said, adding: “It is necessary and Prachandaji himself will win in the presidential election. We are opposed only to active president.”
Koirala also asked the Maoists not to dream about imposing totalitarianism and dictatorship in the country.
