EC officials say 35 voter registration centers across the Valley will be set up to undertake the biometric registration of such voters.[break]
“We have assumed that there are more than one million people who have shifted their base to the Valley from various places across the country. We have planned to register them as voters within 15 days,” EC Spokesperson Sharda Prasad Trital told Republica on Sunday.
According to him, the EC will set up separate registration centers for lawmakers at the Constituent Assembly (CA) building and for security personnel in the Nepal Army and Nepal Police barracks.
“We can finish the registration of lawmakers in a single day if all of them are available,” Trital said.
In the case of sub-metropolitan cities in the Valley, the EC will set up one registration center for every three wards. Besides, registration centers will also be set up in all the 28 cantonments where 19,000-plus Maoist PLA personnel are taking shelter.
As per the new provision, the voters will have to produce a photo and citizenship certificate for registration.
“Those who are living outside their home districts will benefit from this program. We hope no eligible voter will be left out,” Trital said.
The EC is likely to issue public notice in this regard on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the EC has completed voter registrations in 2,350 villages out of 3,915 in the country.
The EC officials said they would complete the registration process in 65 districts by next month.
Madhesh-based parties have disrupted the registration process in Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu and Banke, demanding that the EC revoke its provision of mandatory citizenship for registration.
