Speaking to the journalists, former chief commissioner of India Dr SY Quraishi, presented a clear picture of model code, which started in the early 70s in India and subsequently amended to suit an Indian environment to hold free and fair elections. He said stringent enforcement of code of conduct encourages women to exercise their voting right. He was in Kathmandu for a day.
Dr Surya Subedi, addressing the journalists especially the desk editors, said mission is more than the political process to meet people´s political aspirations. The key members of the constituent assembly, however, stuck to the process which failed to produce a new constitution in the country, added Dr Subedi, an advisor to the British government´s foreign affairs and a professor of international law at University of Leeds, UK.
Dr Gail Marzetti, the head of Department of the International Development, Nepal assured that Britain, the largest bilateral donor to Nepal, would continue to focus on strengthening democracy and improving human rights in Nepal. The other key speakers on the occasion were former home secretary Nabin Ghimire and senior journalist Narayan Wagle.
