Double wins for Yemen in an eventful day

KATHMANDU, Dec 14: Yemen registered twin wins on the second day of the First International IHF Trophy Championship as both the men´s and women´s team secured easy wins in an eventful day, blemished only by accusations of fould play in the women´s match.



Yemeni men´s team thumped Bangladesh 33-18 at the Army Physical Training and Sports Complex, Lagankhel on Friday. [break]Yemen took the lead of 14-8 in the first half and then went on for the final kill in the second half scoring 19-10. Nawaf Mohammad of Yemen was the highest scorer with 9 goals.



Yemeni women´s team also secured victory with ease against Afghanistan as two players from both sides were shown red cards.



Yemeni keeper Fatima Abdullah Musek received the marching order in the 11th minute for a foul on an Afghani player but Yemen went on to take the first half 17-6. Afghanistan also lost its player Nargis Ibrahim for a foul on an opponent as the Afghans were outplayed 11-5 in the second half for an overall 28-11 defeat.

This was the first time that red cards were shown in this tournament organized by the International Handball Federation.



Pakistan got mixed result as the men´s team won its opening match but the women´s team slumped to defeat.



The men´s team of Pakistan subdued a spirited fightback from Afghanistan to win the game 33-27. Pakistan took a 18-13 lead in the first half and held off still Afghan challenge (15-14) in the second half to win the match. Afghanistan´s Mohammad Sabir was the highest scorer with 10 goals but Pakistan pipped its neighbor as Sajad Tarik and Ikram Aslam both scored seven goals for their team.



Meanwhile, the women´s team of Bangladesh made up for the loss of the men´s team by defeating Pakistan 35-15. Bangladesh took the first half by 20-7 and then sealed the match scoring 15-8 in the second half. Sirina Akhtar of Bangladesh was the highest scorer with 10 goals to her credit.
